Heroes of Might and Magic
Olden Era

A new chapter in the classic turn-based strategy lineage

About

Olden Era is the next entry in the storied Heroes of Might and Magic series, developed by Unfrozen and published by Ubisoft. Unfrozen is a small independent studio best known for Iratus: Lord of the Dead, a challenging roguelike dungeon crawler that demonstrated the team's affinity for dark fantasy and turn-based tactics.

The game is a deliberate return to the formula that made HoMM3 a touchstone of the genre. Expect a hand-painted adventure map full of resource nodes, artifact caches, and wandering monster stacks. Weeks of in-game time pass as you build up towns, recruit armies, and level heroes across sprawling, interconnected scenarios.

Combat takes place on a hex grid, preserving the careful stack-versus-stack positioning and spell timing that HoMM veterans remember. Hero progression returns as a central pillar: skills accumulate through combat, and the choices you make define whether your hero becomes a battle-hardened warrior, a siege engine of destructive magic, or a cunning support commander.

Town building remains the economic heart of the game. Each faction has its own construction tree, unit upgrades, and strategic identity, rewarding players who learn the nuances of their chosen faction's strengths and weaknesses across a variety of map objectives.

Setting

The story unfolds on the continent of Jadame, a land unfamiliar to most series veterans. Jadame is set generations before the classic Antagarich storyline, making this a true prequel chapter that expands the lore of the HoMM universe rather than retreading familiar ground.

The tone is dark fantasy throughout: ancient grudges, rising necromantic powers, insectoid hordes pressing at civilized borders, and the constant tension between order and the forces that would unmake it. The world feels lived-in and fragile, which gives even routine skirmishes a sense of consequence.
